Arkansas' State Plan Amendment that authorizes the Medicaid Expansion program—currently known as Arkansas Works—expires on December 31, 2021. This session will provide a history of the Medicaid Expansion program, which was created in 2013 as the Arkansas Private Option, and will discuss the reasons that continuing the program will remain the AHA's number one legislative priority. We'll also discuss other legislative topics that may impact hospitals and the healthcare delivery system, including public policy and legislative issues related to improving population health, access, and coverage through Medicaid and other programs, improving value, addressing consumer issues and workforce shortages, commercial payor relationships, and more.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss growth and funding of Arkansas Medicaid, including successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement
  • Describe how COVID-19 has impacted planning for the 2021 legislative session
  • Recognize the importance of healthcare leaders engaging in advocacy efforts and leading communication and education efforts within local communities
