Don’t Miss the Revised ABN for Part B SNF Services

The Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN), Form CMS-R-131, is issued by providers (including laboratories, home health agencies and hospices), physicians, practitioners and suppliers to traditional Medicare (fee for service) beneficiaries in situations where Medicare payment is expected to be denied. Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) must use the ABN for items and services expected to be denied under Medicare Part B. The effective date for use of this ABN form was June 21, 2017. There aren’t changes to the form itself, but the form has a new expiration date. It also includes the beneficiaries’ rights to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) nondiscrimination practices, along with how to request the ABN in an alternative format if needed. All SNFs should verify they’re using the correct version of the ABN.
