The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) stated approximately 91 percent of long-term care (LTC) providers submitted Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) staffing data by the February 14, 2017, deadline. While it’s great that the system is up and running without the problems that plagued the system in November 2016, it’s bad news for the 9 percent of LTC providers who didn’t submit PBJ staffing data.
On April 21, 2017, CMS released a Survey and Certification memo that addressed four issues related to PBJ submission:
- While providers won’t see PBJ data used in the Five Star Quality Rating System until 2018, those facilities that haven’t submitted data for two consecutive deadlines (February 14 and May 15) will have their overall and staffing ratings suppressed (removed) until data is received. This is expected to create the largest effect.
- Providers can go to Nursing Home Compare to see if their facilities are in compliance by viewing the PBJ icon. If the icon is green, data has been received; gray indicates PBJ data hasn’t been received and the facility is out of compliance.
- Providers have 45 days after the quarter’s last day to submit PBJ data.
