February 14, 2017, is the second Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) submission’s final date for all long-term care (LTC) facilities. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began requiring quarterly staffing and census data to be submitted as of July 1, 2016. LTC facilities have 45 days from the end of each quarter to submit the PBJ data. CMS strongly encourages all facilities to submit as soon as possible. There were transmission difficulties and a huge backlog during the first required submission due to high volume. CMS hopes to avoid a repeat.
LTC facilities can verify compliance with PBJ by checking the Nursing Home Compare website. CMS has added an indicator of data submission next to a facility’s name. The indicator will be green (see example below) if PBJ data has been submitted and gray if data hasn’t.
