Through a survey series on prevalent topics, BKD National Higher Education Group hopes to provide leaders with data and insightful commentary that can aid them in making tough decisions. The first survey in the series covers leadership and its intrinsic challenges. Using graphs illustrating data for public, private and all institutions, the article helps show the differences and similarities. The questions covered leadership development, innovation, systems of shared governance, the relationship between the board chair and president, board’s work and presidential and faculty evaluation systems. Though the importance of quality leadership is well-known, the survey revealed some notable differences among participants. In addition to supplying the results, the article provides some tips on improving leadership.
