Sage 500 ERP – Planning for the Future

Most of you are aware that Sage 500 ERP is being “sunsetted,” a nice word meaning gradually phased out. While Sage is committed to supporting the product through at least August 2017, it is not too early to start thinking about your company’s options for replacing Sage 500 ERP.

Where We Are Now
From now through 2017, Sage has said that it will focus primarily on the quality of the code base of Sage 500 ERP, adding only limited functionality to the product. However, the functionality they have planned includes some highly usable additions such as mobile applications and ACH receivables.

You’ve Got Options
Most clients will find migrating to one of the other three active ERP solutions from Sage is the best option. Sage is expected to offer generous incentives for such migrations. Sage 100 ERP and Sage ERP X3 are dynamic and powerful solutions that represent viable next steps for Sage 500 ERP users.

Your BKD consultant can help you determine which of these solutions best meets your organization’s needs, both now and in the future. Of course, it’s possible that you and your consultant will determine that your best option lies outside the Sage family of products.

Start Your Planning Early
With the knowledge that Sage 500 ERP support from Sage will end in 2017, you have ample time to determine a wise course of action. We recommend you start preliminary planning now. Our BKD consulting team has assembled a number of tools that will help you clarify your company’s current utilization of Sage 500 ERP, perform a functional needs assessment—including future plans and expansions—calculate your annual spend on the software and begin to formulate a budget for the migration. Ask your consultant to introduce you to these tools so you can get started.

Remain Current
Migration tools are typically designed to work with current versions of an application, and we would expect this to be true of the tools Sage will provide to streamline migration from Sage 500 ERP to Sage 100, 300, or X3. We recommend you continue to maintain your annual support agreement, both to ease the ultimate transition and to benefit from the features and functionality that will be incorporated with each new release.
