The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 required CMS to remove Social Security numbers (SSN) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. Each Medicare beneficiary should have received a randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) that replaces the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number used for Medicare transactions such as billing, eligibility status and claim status. The MBI will always have 11 characters containing both numbers and letters. Effective January 1, 2020, providers must use the MBI for all Medicare transactions. Any claims or assessments transmitted on or after January 1, 2020, will be rejected if they don’t contain the MBI.
