E-Verify is a web-based system that allows employers to confirm an employee’s eligibility to work in the United States. It’s often used to assist businesses in meeting the requirements of state incentive programs. From December 22 to January 25, the website was unavailable due to the lengthy government furlough (“Government Furlough, E-Verify & Effects on State Incentive Programs”). Now that the furlough has ceased, E-Verify is back online. Thus, it will be important for incentive-seeking employers to register any backlogged new employees they hired during the furlough.

It’s especially important to complete these registrations timely, as the website may be back down as soon as February 15 due to uncertainty of the federal government’s ability to stay open after that date. For more information, contact Amy or your trusted BKD advisor.
