The Importance of Leadership Diversity During Crisis
As the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the incidence of COVID-19 (COVID-19) disrupts life across the globe, BKD remains innovative and continues to find fresh solutions to meet our clients’ needs. We’re grateful to have a firm full of diverse talent, skills and niche expertise to help us keep our promise of Unmatched Client Service®. Our trusted advisors have been working diligently to understand the changing guidelines and regulations associated with COVID-19. With a wide range of perspectives and experiences, we’ve been able to meet this crisis head on and compile detailed resources to help organizations operate through this pandemic and come out stronger on the other side.
“Team diversity increases our ability to solve complex problems, think creatively and promote innovation,” says BKD Managing Partner Wendy Henry.
In addition to her role as managing partner for the firm’s St. Louis and Decatur offices, Wendy is chair of BKD’s SKY Advisory Council. As BKD’s firmwide initiative to emphasize and strengthen diversity and promote inclusion, SKY has helped expand the firm’s inclusive culture and create additional rewarding career opportunities for all team members. The path set forward by BKD’s SKY initiative in 2014 has further helped position the firm for its effective COVID-19 response.
In addition to covering key tax topics, such as COVID-19 relief measures and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, “Simply Tax” host Damien Martin also features episodes on other essential topics, like diversity. Damien sat down with blogger and podcaster Danetha Doe for Simply Tax Episode 33 – The Future of Tax Accounting with Danetha Doe, where they talked trends in accounting, personal branding, women in the workplace and more. When discussing how men can be better mentors to women, Damien and Danetha discussed the importance of recognizing your biases and being intentional.
“I’ve taken Danetha’s comments to heart. It’s often easy to get blindsided by your perspective, but her advice has helped me realize aspects I might not be considering. There’s only one thing I’d add to her list: Don’t be afraid to ask for help and admit your blind spots when you identify them,” Damien says.
With remarkable leaders in place such as Wendy and Damien, BKD is well positioned to address critical COVID-19 business decisions with open conversations rooted in an understanding that it takes a group of individuals across industries, races, genders and ages to address the world’s most critical issues with success.
