The holiday season in Colorado brings mountains of snow and low temperatures in the single digits. When Partner Kimberly McKay, recipient of the 2015 BKD PRIDE Award, moved to Houston from the idyllic winter landscape, getting in the holiday spirit was a challenge. Leaving behind the snow-covered streets for sunshine and 70-degree weather didn’t feel like the holidays.
During her second year in Houston, Kimberly discovered the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market. The Nutcracker Market is an annual holiday fundraising shopping event that supports the Houston Ballet Foundation, along with its Academy and scholarship programs. The Houston Ballet Foundation also receives support out of proceeds from general admission, special event tickets and merchandise sales. Since its inception in 1981, the Nutcracker Market has helped bring arts education to thousands of students throughout the Houston area.
“I heard about the Nutcracker Market and how a percentage of the proceeds goes to support the Houston Ballet. I decided to take my daughters, and as the nation’s largest holiday market, you can imagine how excited we were to start the season with such a wonderful event,” says Kimberly.
Now, she explains, the Nutcracker Market is a special holiday season tradition. It’s even turned into a bonding experience for BKDers throughout the office. Debbie Scanlon, Lori Victory, Kimberly McKay, Amanda Eaves, Jennifer Friesz and Stephanie Rocco all attended the 39th annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market, which took place November 14 to 17.
“It’s festive and all the purchases support a good cause,” says Kimberly. “It changed my holiday season for the better.”
