Recent Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Updates

On May 10, 2010, Medicare contractors received revised Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) payment files pertaining to services with dates of service January 1 through May 31, 2010. This correction led to a change in the conversion factor for calculating payment rates for services paid under the MPFS for this period. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has directed Medicare contractors to adjust claims previously paid for dates of service from January 1, 2010, to May 31, 2010, which will result in a small payment increase for most claims.

Separately, on June 25, 2010, President Obama signed the Preservation of Access to Care for Medicare Beneficiaries and Pension Relief Act of 2010. The law eliminated a 21.3 percent cut in payment rates for services provided under the MPFS that had gone into effect on June 1 and temporarily increased payment rates by 2.2 percent for dates of service from June 1, 2010, through November 30, 2010. Without further congressional intervention, rates likely will change again on December 1, 2010, to reflect the large payment rate decrease that has been temporarily delayed.
