Health Care Payment Reform Center

Transfer Diagnosis-Related Groups

Certain Diagnosis-Related Groups—also known as Transfer DRGs—are paid under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Post-Acute Transfer (PACT) rule, which can significantly affect your hospital’s revenue. By transferring patients with short hospital stays to a post-acute care provider for additional care, you may not receive the full DRG payment on those claims. For certain transfer cases, you may miss out on the payments you’ve earned.

BKD has developed a defined methodology for identifying patients not transferred to post-acute care where the Medicare payment was less than what your hospital was entitled to receive. Once those underpayments are identified, we can help you recover the revenue. That means an improved bottom line for you and a more efficient process for your patients.

OSU Medical Center

"BKD is top-notch when it comes to their knowledge and efforts involved in the Transfer DRG process. We have worked with other vendors previously, but BKD stands out as the leader in this area. BKD takes the extra step of calling the post-acute provider to ensure the information is correct. Our prior vendors did not take this extra step. BKD is extremely knowledgeable and works well with our business office and finance teams."
