Hospice Self-Determined Aggregate Payment Cap Report Due February 28

Health Care Operational Services

Evaluating and improving your operations is the key to success and longevity in any industry—especially health care. The health care advisors of BKD can help your home care or hospice group with episode and care management, OASIS accuracy assessments and compliance issues and work with you to create a plan to improve your organizational performance.

Episode & Care Management Training

To help you establish an operations model rewarding high performing outcomes, BKD can provide home health episode management training and implementation services. These services can be designed to allow concurrent monitoring of clinical and financial outcomes while still influencing control during the episode. The model protocols utilize existing management tools, as well as supplemental tools designed by us, that will be designed to allow agency personnel to:

  • Identify outcome indicators targeted for improvement
  • Identify at-risk outcome indicators in each new episode
  • Monitor at-risk outcomes during the episode
  • Monitor targeted outcomes by personnel
  • Monitor utilization by episode
  • Focus management on at-risk episodes and lower-performing personnel

OASIS Accuracy Assessments & Training

To help evaluate the adequacy and accuracy of Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) data collection practices, which are the basis of the Medicare home health prospective payment system payment rates, BKD can look through selected patient medical records.

Our procedures include comparing actual OASIS assessment scoring and diagnosis coding from home health personnel to referral sheet documentation, medical plan of care, visit notes and other medical record documentation. We can compare payment rates based on the actual OASIS assessments scored by agency personnel to estimated payment rates based on the OASIS data we have rescored according to medical documentation.

Corporate Compliance
Our professionals can:

  • Assist your legal counsel in developing effective corporate compliance plans
  • Resolve compliance problems or complete risk assessments
  • Conduct training
  • Introduce documentation procedures that can improve compliance
  • Perform interim or annual compliance audits

Independent Review Organization (IRO) Designation
Home care organizations entering into a corporate integrity agreement (CIA) with the Department of Justice typically must contract with an IRO to independently verify their compliance with the CIA terms.

Our approach to acting as an IRO and providing independent verification uses cost-effective techniques customized to your CIA. We apply our experience with coding and billing and auditing to perform the required testing of the CIA, offering many potential benefits such as:

  • Improving cash flow
  • Avoiding lost payments due to billing errors
  • Cleaning up backlog of unpaid claims
  • Training billing staff to understand and comply with regulations
  • Creating more time to focus on delivering patient care

Performance Improvement

  • Evaluate key performance indicators
  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities and increase efficiency to improve overall financial health

John Knox Village

“The support staff of BKD provided John Knox Village with tools and training that allowed us to complete the implementation and transition in a timely manner. John Knox Village saw a drastic reduction in the outstanding accounts receivable and in the error rate on claims due to the pre-billing audit tool also provided by BKD."

“Since that time, BKD has continued to provide ongoing training and consultation and still provides monthly assistance in the billing and reporting process. We all really appreciate having BKD associates a phone call away; it is more than your typical client relationship. We highly recommend that if anyone is looking for a home health accounts receivable clean-up or assistance that you look to BKD and their excellent staff.”
