Internships

An internship with BKD gives you hands-on experience in the demanding public accounting profession. You will learn how the theories and principles of accounting are applied to many types of businesses.

As an intern, you'll have the same responsibilities as full-time, first-year staff accountants and the same opportunities to work with BKD partners and other professionals on a variety of client engagements.

Audit & Tax Tracks

BKD offers audit and tax internships that provide you with real-world experience and help improve your understanding of the theories and practice of accounting. You'll find yourself developing effective working relationships and friendships with professionals who may become your future co-workers.

As part of an audit or tax client service team, you will receive a variety of assignments, including the following:

Audit Internships

  • Prepare electronic audit work using the firm's innovative software
  • Learn BKD's audit approach for internal controls, cash, accounts receivable and payable
  • Participate in inventory counts, test accounts receivable, aging schedules for accuracy and reconcile accounts payable
  • Provide assistance with consulting engagements

Tax Internships

  • Prepare tax returns using the firm's sophisticated tax preparation software
  • Learn about BKD's steps to complete a return
  • Work on nearly every type of tax return the office handles, such as returns for individuals, partnerships and C and S corporations
  • Provide assistance with consulting engagements

"The internship exceeded my expectations. The audit was a little overwhelming at first, but the theory I learned in class did make more sense after the real thing. My semester at BKD confirmed my career choice of becoming an auditor."

— Amy, first-year staff accountant

"The internship was a great learning experience, and I felt more knowledgeable about tax when I finished. It was hard at first since I had not taken my school's corporate tax class before the internship. However, when I did take the class, the internship helped me to understand the class better. The internship gave me an opportunity to know what public accounting is really like and to know if I have what it takes to succeed.

— Luke, first-year staff accountant"

Eligibility

Internships are designed for juniors and seniors majoring in accounting with at least a 3.0 grade point average or better who, at a minimum, have completed intermediate accounting classes and, if possible, an introductory tax class. You will be expected to understand the concepts and applications presented in these classes at your college.

You are not limited to a single internship. If your college schedule and graduation plan allow for multiple semesters off-campus, you may apply for another BKD internship after successfully completing the first one.

What to Expect

As an intern, you will work for BKD during a fall, spring or summer semester and then return to school to complete your studies. Some interns work part time while also taking classes, but most devote full time to the internship. Opportunities for internships vary from school to school and depend on the needs of each BKD office.

Buddies Help You Get Connected Fast

Before you start, your BKD buddy will contact you. Your buddy is a resource to answer your questions and show you the ropes so you can hit the ground running at BKD with confidence. Don't worry, your buddy will expect lots of questions from you.

Compensation & Fringe Benefits

You will receive competitive pay for interns, and any overtime worked will be paid at time and one-half rates. You will be paid twice a month and, as a temporary employee, will receive partial benefits. You also will be eligible for our overnight travel award.

After the Internship

An internship is an opportunity for you to get an inside look at BKD and public accounting, and it's an opportunity for BKD to get to know you. If both you and BKD like what they see, at the end of the internship you may receive a job offer to return to BKD as a full-time staff accountant after you graduate.

How to Apply

Contact your school's accounting department or a BKD recruiter to find out what internships are available for your preferred location and time. You'll need a résumé, references and an up-to-date summary of classes completed, grades and overall grade point average.
