It’s the most wonderful time of the year! As the end of the fiscal year (FY) 2017 program year rapidly approaches, the Electronic Health Record (EHR) meaningful use attestation process gets a makeover. Some hospitals will no longer be attesting for meaningful use on the standard Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website. Instead, meaningful use attestations will occur on the QualityNet Secure Portal.

So what does this entail for your hospital? That depends on whether you’re a Medicare-only, Medicaid-only or Medicare and Medicaid dual-eligible hospital.

Medicare-Only Hospitals

Hospitals and critical access hospitals will be required to use the QualityNet Secure Portal for FY 2017 program year meaningful use attestations and will no longer be able to log into the CMS website after December 31, 2017.

Medicaid-Only Hospitals

The CMS website will still be available to hospitals, which should plan on contacting their respective state Medicaid agency for specific instructions.

Medicare & Medicaid Dual-Eligible Hospitals

Hospitals attesting for both Medicare and Medicaid EHR programs will still be required to register with the QualityNet Secure Portal to be able to attest for Medicare meaningful use. Hospitals should plan on contacting their respective state Medicaid agency for specific Medicaid EHR attestation instructions.

If not already completed, hospitals should plan to create log-in information by registering with QualityNet. This will require whomever the hospital appoints as its representative to be individually approved and verified. Hospitals will be unable to attest to FY 2017 program year meaningful use until they’ve successfully registered with QualityNet. Due to the potential for processing delays of the hospital representative’s approval and verification with QualityNet, BKD suggests hospitals begin the registration process earlier rather than later.

Remember—FY 2017 program year meaningful use attestations are scheduled to begin early January 2018.
