The fourth-quarter FY 2013 Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER) is now available. The newly released SNF PEPPER provides statistics through September 2013. Reports must be downloaded through the secure PEPPER access page and are available in Microsoft Excel. Reports only will be available for download approximately one year from the release date.

The SNF PEPPER only can be accessed by the CEO, president or administrator for each SNF. The designated official will need to register to obtain access to the secure portal. Instructions are available on the PEPPER website.

The new SNF PEPPER release updates the “state” comparison group to include all SNFs in a state. The prior version of the PEPPER only compared SNFs by state that had the same Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). SNFs should keep in mind their state percentiles may vary from their previous PEPPER due to this change.

The PEPPER can be a valuable tool for SNFs and should be one of several proactive measures for compliance and auditing. If you are having difficulty understanding your SNF PEPPER or have outliers and are interested in an unbiased external review—or if you'd like more information or want to schedule a Medicare record review or training for your organization—contact your BKD advisor.
