TMF Health Quality Institute, the organization that distributes the Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER), has announced that 7,363, or 49 percent, of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) have accessed their PEPPERs as of June 30, 2014.

The PEPPER is a valuable tool for monitoring Medicare program compliance. It allows SNFs to identify areas where they may be outliers and determine risk associated with Medicare reimbursement. Identifying risk is the first step in preventing a Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) medical review and potential recoupment of funds.

If you have not accessed your SNF PEPPER, visit www.PEPPERresources.org and follow the instructions below.

The CEO, president or administrator should:

  1. Review the Secure PEPPER Access Guide.
  2. Visit the Secure PEPPER Access page at PEPPERresources.org.
  3. Review the instructions and obtain the information required to authenticate access.
  4. Click the button to access the Secure PEPPER Portal.
  5. Complete all the fields.
  6. Download your PEPPER as a Microsoft Excel file.

The previous release of the PEPPER (version Q4FY12, released in 2013) will be available via the Secure PEPPER Portal in early August 2014. Another email notification will be sent when it is available.

Note:  SNFs/swing bed units administered by short-term acute care hospitals will continue to receive their PEPPERs via QualityNet; they are not available through the PEPPERresources.org Secure PEPPER Portal.

If you have difficulty accessing or understanding your SNF PEPPER, please contact your BKD advisor.
