IRS Releases 2011 Schedule H Draft & Requests Input
By: Jana Kirksey
On December 15, 2011, the IRS released a draft version, with instructions, of the 2011 Form 990, Schedule H for hospitals. Based on input from the health care community and the public, there are several changes to Schedule H for tax year 2011.
The only optional section of Schedule H for the 2011 tax year is the community health needs assessment section (Part V, Section B, lines one through seven). For tax years beginning after March 23, 2012, this section will be required. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act imposes new requirements on tax-exempt hospitals, and Part V, Section B was added in tax year 2010 to monitor compliance. The 2011 Form 990 also requires hospital organizations to attach a copy of their most recent audited financial statements to the return.
The public is invited to comment on the draft version of Schedule H and the instructions. Comments must be submitted on or before January 15, 2012, to be considered for tax year 2012 Schedule H. These submissions can be made by email to Form990revisions@irs.gov or by mail to:
